Sheldon

Migrating birds

Led by Andrew Mann

Birds can be endlessly fascinating yet most of us know so little about their lives. Sheldon provides a home base for a few days of exploration and discovery.

At this time of year the coastline and estuaries of South Devon are great places to see wintering birds. Many of them flock into the mild waters of South-West England which provide perfect feeding areas before they fly off once more to their breeding grounds in the spring.

We will have the chance to visit some of the best birdwatching sites in the area to see a rich variety of birds such as Avocet, Curlew, Black-tailed Godwit and Cirl Bunting. This is a chance to enjoy nature at its best and to hone your skills of observation and identification by sound and sight with an experienced guide to hand.

The week includes at least two trips out by minibus. You will need a degree of fitness and suitable clothing to take part in the walks. However, most walking will be on relatively flat terrain, not fast-paced and not likely to be more than for more than three miles at any venue. There are viewing hides at some locations. Packed lunches will be provided. Beg, steal or borrow a pair of binoculars to bring with you. Warm Sheldon hospitality back at base. Guests are always welcome to join daily community prayers.

Andrew Mann led birdsong walks for guests during his three years on Community at Lee Abbey in North Devon. He is now a regular feature on their programme leading birdwatching excursions. A keen ornithologist since childhood, he also leads birding walks in Oxfordshire and further afield in the UK. Andrew edited 'The Birds of Lee Abbey Devon’ book and is on the committee of the Oxford Ornithological Society. He sees birdwatching very much as an extension of his personal appreciation of God’s creation, and whilst not tending to be particularly overt about it, he trusts that the whole experience speaks to people about God.

This event is open to everyone.
